While neuromodulators all use the same basic chemistry, there are differences between them that may mean one is better suited to an individual patient’s situation than others.
Here’s a quick overview of the neuromodulators available at Skin Esteem:
BOTOX® Cosmetic
This is the brand most people know, and it was the first neuromodulator to see widespread use. BOTOX Cosmetic has received FDA approval for use in reducing frown lines. The wrinkle reducer can be used in a number of ways to smooth lines, including:
- Creases on the forehead
- Glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows)
- Crow’s feet
- Lines around the nose and bunny lines on the nose
- Chin dimpling
- Smoker’s lines
- Marionette lines
Xeomin®
Xeomin is a neuromodulator that is manufactured through a unique process which isolates the therapeutic component of the molecule. This process removes other proteins and compounds that don’t have an active role in the treatment process.
Xeomin notes that this produces a more purified neuromodulator, which it believes aids the treatment process by reducing potential side effects and unusual outcomes. Most patients who use Xeomin injections to reduce wrinkles are in their 40s and 50s, although there is a growing number of younger patients in their late 20s and 30s who use injectables as a way to “pre-treat” lines before they become overly prominent.
Dysport®
Dysport is another effective injectable neurotoxin. It’s fast-acting and studies show that for treating moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines) it may be longer lasting than other neuromodulators—up to five months in some patients. It’s become a popular choice for many of our patients in Northern Kentucky and the Greater Cincinnati area.
Jeuveau®
FDA-approved Jeuveau has been called the “modern-made tox” because of its unique manufacturing process. Like other neuromodulators, it’s injected into the muscles between the eyebrows for temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines.
Neuromodulator injectables require no downtime, and most treatment can be completed in less than an hour. Many patients begin seeing results quickly, which makes them popular for people who are preparing for big events like weddings, holiday parties, and more.
Because the effects are temporary, injections must be repeated periodically to maintain their effectiveness.
